The pH is within the range 0.1−2.0. The electrolyte may also include 10.0−70.0 g/l PO4 radicals.

The hydrogenation of phenol to cyclohexanone is catalysed by an Al2O3-supported mixture of 0.1−5% Pt-group metal and 5−50% alkaline earth metal hydroxide and/or alkaline earth metal oxide. The catalyst must have a specific area of 110 m2/g and at least 40% of the pores in the range 100Å−500Å.

The oxides of the core metal or alloy are chosen to be less volatile than the oxides of Mo at operating temperature within the range 1100° to 1500°C.
