Platinum Oxidation Catalysts in the Control of Air Pollution
By By D. P. Thornton Jr.Platinum alloys supported on specially prepared alloy steel ribbons and formed into mat-like beds of various shapes and sizes have been developed for the flameless combustion of fumes from industrial processes. This article describes a number of typical installations employing catalytic combustion elements to eliminate objectionable vapours and so to avoid pollution of the atmosphere.

Novel Method of Electrical Storage
By By F. A. LewisDifferent pairs of palladium alloys can form a series of secondary cells that depend for their operation, both during charging and discharging, solely on the transfer of hydrogen from one electrode to the other. Cells may be prepared with a low internal resistance and future studies of a wider range of palladium alloys are likely to extend the range of working voltages available.

Continuous Temperature Measurement of Molten Steel
By By John D. SharpFollowing the development of rapid methods of steel analysis the need for greater control of bath temperature has become important, particularly in melting shops using oxygen lancing techniques. In arc furnaces there is also the opportunity of using the temperature to control the power input during refining. This article describes the development of a water-cooled thermocouple probe for continuous immersion.

The Anodic Protection of Steel
By By J. HillThe use of anodic protection of steels against corrosion in various solutions has been well authenticated by laboratory experiments. However, the method has been little used by the chemical industry. This article summarises the basic principles of the technique and describes the substantial successes obtained in these field trials reported up to the present time.
