Platinax II is the latest development in magnetic alloys of the cobalt-platinum system, and is one of the most powerful permanent magnet materials known. Because it can be machined, rolled or drawn without difficulty, this alloy lends itself to the manufacture of magnets of complex shape or very small size that would be impracticable in conventional alloys

This paper reviews some recent studies of the borides, silicides and phosphides of the platinum metals. These phases, especially those with a high metal content, have very similar properties. After some general information on the binary systems, brief comments are made on the preparation and properties of the intermediate phases while some features of their crystal chemistry are presented in more detail.

In the second part of this article, concluded from the April issue of ‘Platinum Metals Review’, the author deals with the creep properties of the rhodium-platinum alloys, their resistance to oxidation and corrosion, and finally with their applications in industry.
